PRIVATE TOUR
The Great Australian Wine Tour The Great Australian Wine Tour is an example
of a fourteen-day tour that features wine touring through the wine regions of
Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales. The emphasis is on fine wines
and food but also includes highlights and is tailored to all levels of wine
experience. We can combine Australian wine Regions as modules of three days to
create a program, which also can encompass new tours to Tasmania and Western
Australia. We can tailor make this tour to suit your needs.
A Taste of Real Australia A Taste of the Real Australia gives visitors
the opportunity to experience the best of all aspects of life in South
Australia. We begin with a native bush food tour through the Botanic Gardens
then through the Aboriginal Cultural Gallery with our Aboriginal guide.
Visiting farms, interacting with animals, horse riding if you wish and crossing
the mighty River Murray by ferry with a gourmet bush BBQ (or similar). We enjoy
a taste of everything from the fine wines, an aboriginal culture and rural
experience over the one to three-day tour. We also offer the 5 nights Fleurieu
Peninsula, Coorong and the Limestone Coast which offers some of the best kept

DAY 1 ADELAIDE BAROSSA VALLEY (71 kms) Pick up your HERTZ MEDIUM AWD
vehicle at Klemzig (Adelaide) depot (or Adelaide Airport at additional cost)
and travel north to reach the Barossa Valley. Take the picturesque route
through the Adelaide Hills, via Chain of Ponds and Kersbrook to Williamstown.
Continue on to Lyndoch, perhaps stopping for morning tea at the Lyndoch Bakery.
After Lyndoch, there is an endless choice of attractions and wineries. This
afternoon continue exploring the wineries of the region, perhaps visiting those
near the town of Nuriootpa, such as Elderton Wines, Penfolds Wines and the
striking contemporary setting of Wolf Blass Visitor Centre. WILLIAMSTOWN - A
pretty little hamlet at the southern edge of the Barossa, Williamstown is
better known for its timber than its wine, being at the centre of the local
pine forest industry. Many of the original stone buildings in the town centre
are still in use. Of special interest is the Whispering Wall, the huge curved
retaining wall of the Barossa Reservoir that's about 140 metres long and an
acoustic miracle. You can speak in a normal voice and people at the other end
of the wall can hear you clearly. LYNDOCH - If your quest is to experience a
country town that has evolved with the times into a mecca of contemporary
ambience, but maintained its English foundations and strong German influences,
then Lyndoch is the place for you. This rich soil today boasts several of the
Barossa's finest wineries. If nature is more your thing, then roam through and
enjoy the aromatic smells of the Lyndoch Lavender Farm. Get traditional German
bread at the local bakery, pick up a stick of South Australia's awardwinning
best smoky mettwurst and breathe the fresh air on the village green. TANUNDA -
Historically, picturesque Tanunda has always been the heart of the Barossa
region, and its history is only a small part of its charms. Tanunda is a
vibrant and growing community and is home to some of Australia's and the
world's best-loved wines. Explore the magnificently restored Chateau Tanunda,
now home to a modern function centre, as well as a showcase for the Barossa's
boutique wineries. If you're looking for history, great food, memorable wines,
fun times and friendly faces, you'll find a brilliant blend in Tanunda. You'll
also find the Barossa Visitor Information Centre right in the centre of
Tanunda's main street, where you can get friendly advice on everything you want
to know about the Barossa.
DAY 2 BAROSSA VALLEY RAWNSLEY PARK STATION (384 kms) Travel to Wilpena
via Melrose, the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. It has a beautiful setting
at the foot of Mount Remarkable (which is surrounded by national park). Be sure
to stop at the North Star Hotel for a drink or bite to eat. Then continue north
to the former railway town of Quorn then on to Wilpena Pound in Flinders Ranges
National Park.
MELROSE is a charming reminder of early South Australia, nestled at the foot of
Mount Remarkable National Park. The town serves a rural community and at the
same time offers a pleasant holiday retreat. Many of Melrose's features are
within walking distance. Climb to the War Memorial for a panoramic view over
the Willochra Plain or to Lookout Hill near the water tanks. Cathedral Rock is
a spectacular formation along the edge of Mount Remarkable Creek, west of the
town. Walk through the fascinating Melrose Courthouse Heritage Centre which
brings to life the early days of miners, timber workers, pioneering women and
farm workers. This innovative museum has possibly one of the best depictions of
the early history of the upper and far north of South Australia. QUORN -
Cradled in a Flinders Ranges valley, Quorn is one of Australias most
historic railway towns. At one time trains from the north, south, east and west
all stopped at Quorn and for many years it was the southern terminal for the
famous Ghan rail journey to Alice Springs. Although its days as one of the
nations major railheads are over, the romance lingers on through
volunteer enthusiasts who continue to operate a steam train service which
regularly makes the 33km round trip on a restored line between Quorn and Pichi
Richi. They also maintain the railway workshops which supports a collection of
old locomotives and rolling stock.
DAY 3 WILPENA POUND At Rawnsley Park Station, your stay can be as active or as
relaxed as you like. The property is perfectly situated for exploring the
Flinders Ranges National Park, and the region's most well-known landmark,
Wilpena Pound, is on the doorstep. Four-wheel drive tours, scenic flights,
horseriding treks and mountain bike hire are all available from Rawnsley Park
Station. There is a network of excellent bushwalking trails, suitable for
beginners through to experienced walkers, located on the property. If
relaxation is more your thing, you can take a dip in the swimming pool, enjoy a
leisurely meal at the Woolshed Restaurant or gather your friends around a camp
bonfire. WILPENA POUND - Amidst the vibrant colours of the 800 million-year-old
quartzite and limestone outcrop that is the Flinders Ranges lies Wilpena Pound,
a natural amphitheatre 17km long and 7km wide. Shaped by the weathering and
uplifting of land over time, this place has strong significance to the
indigenous Adnyamthanha people. Wilpena Pound is a huge flat plain covered in
scrub and trees and totally surrounded by jagged hills which form a rim. From
the ground it looks like a rugged low mountain range which can easily be
traversed. When you reach the top you look across the plain and can clearly see
the hills around the edges.
DAY 4 WILPENA POUND - CLARE (313 kms) This morning, head south to arrive at the
Clare Valley. Visit the heritage-listed village of Mintaro and enjoy a walk
around the remarkable buildings, all a short distance from each other. The
magnificent 19th century mansion Martindale Hall is approximately 10 minutes
drive from Mintaro and open to the public. CLARE VALLEY - As well as being the
centre of an important pastoral industry, the Clare Valley is internationally
known for its cool climate wines. While a few of the larger wineries have a
base here, Clare Valley is known for its boutique wineries whose cellar doors
are generally located in close proximity to each other along the Main North
Road. Take the opportunity to sample the area's fine wines at one of dozens of
cellar doors.
Day 5 CLARE VALLEY Today is at your leisure to discover more about the Clare
Valley. Perhaps discover the Riesling Trail which runs for 25 kilometres along
the old Riverton to Spalding railway line between the towns of Clare and
Auburn. It's suitable for recreational walkers and is also suitable for
mountain and touring bikes, as well as wheelchairs and pushers. Named after the
grape and wine variety that the region is famous for, the Riesling Trail
travels past many cellar doors and other visitor attractions, making it ideal
for those wanting a leisurely walk with a distraction or two. There are
numerous loop trails, which allow users to return to their starting point
without travelling over old ground.
DAY 6 CLARE ADELAIDE (134 kms) Enjoy a leisurely morning before
returning to Adelaide. Return your vehicle to the Adelaide Airport depot or
Adelaide city Hertz Depot.
