At Blue Duck Lodge Located near Taupo on a sheep farm in the Ruapehu District on the banks of the Whanganui and Retaruke Rivers, and surrounded by Whanganui National park, Retaruke Station is an outdoor enthusiasts playground! At Blue Duck Lodge, Pinecones Lodge and Whio Lodge you are only steps away from countless activities and surrounded by the natural beauty of the Whakahoro Valley. Both lodges offer guests up-market accommodation in a secluded bush setting, involved in several conservation projects, Blue Duck preservation and historical building restoration. Blue Duck Lodge's priority is to work preserving the area's natural beauty while while educating guests about Blue Duck, local native species and the history of the Whakahoro Valley. Experience the flavor of life on a sheep station by joining a farm tour which could include activities such as mustering, drafting and shearing. Spectacular views of the surrounding countryside are guaranteed from the tops of the many ridges along the surrounding farmland.

Horse riding is available on over 5000 acres of tracked land superb for backcountry horse trekking. The scenery varies from ridge top tracks, bush boundary fence lines, native bush canopy, mountainous views, green hilltop flats, pine tree forest and river views. There is at least a week's horse riding to do without going over the same track twice. Using the lodge as a base, there are several loop tracks which can be combined for half day or full day treks, stopping at one of the lovely view points for a picnic or swim along the way. Alternatively, two or more day treks can be arranged. There is an option to camp at one of the farm's old shepherd huts where there is a hot shower and an old coal range to cook on. Food can be delivered if you choose to have catering. We have suitable trekking horses but also welcome you to bring your own.
