At Blue Duck Lodge Located near Taupo on a sheep
farm in the Ruapehu District on the banks of the Whanganui and Retaruke Rivers,
and surrounded by Whanganui National park, Retaruke Station is an outdoor
enthusiasts playground! At Blue Duck Lodge, Pinecones Lodge and Whio Lodge you
are only steps away from countless activities and surrounded by the natural
beauty of the Whakahoro Valley. Both lodges offer guests up-market
accommodation in a secluded bush setting, involved in several conservation
projects, Blue Duck preservation and historical building restoration. Blue Duck
Lodge's priority is to work preserving the area's natural beauty while while
educating guests about Blue Duck, local native species and the history of the
Whakahoro Valley. Experience the flavor of life on a sheep station by joining a
farm tour which could include activities such as mustering, drafting and
shearing. Spectacular views of the surrounding countryside are guaranteed from
the tops of the many ridges along the surrounding farmland.
Horse riding is available on over 5000 acres of tracked land superb for
backcountry horse trekking. The scenery varies from ridge top tracks, bush
boundary fence lines, native bush canopy, mountainous views, green hilltop
flats, pine tree forest and river views. There is at least a week's horse
riding to do without going over the same track twice. Using the lodge as a
base, there are several loop tracks which can be combined for half day or full
day treks, stopping at one of the lovely view points for a picnic or swim along
the way. Alternatively, two or more day treks can be arranged. There is an
option to camp at one of the farm's old shepherd huts where there is a hot
shower and an old coal range to cook on. Food can be delivered if you choose to
have catering. We have suitable trekking horses but also welcome you to bring
your own.
South Island, Nelson:
Warwick House was built in 1854 by a well known merchant.
Architecturally, Warwick House is one of the finest and largest examples of
early Victorian Gothic Revivalist style remaining in New Zealand. All suites
reflect the history of the rooms with a strong traditional Victorian feel, and
have stunning views of Nelson and the harbor. The family dog can be taken out
for walks, if you want some company.
