Itinerary

Day 1. Christchurch, Lake Tekapo. You will be met at the airport in Christchurch, then travel through the mixed cropping and sheep grazing holdings of the vast Canterbury Plains, then passing through the High Country, we cross the braided Rakaia River and continue to beautiful Lake Tekapo, once an ancient glacier and visit the picturesque tiny stone Church of the Good Shepherd. Stay: Mt Cook, The Hermitage. Dx1

Day 2. Mt Cook, Dunedin. This morning in the heart of MacKenzie Country, surrounded by majestic mountain scenery and wide open tussock grasslands. We then journey into New Zealand’s highland and Mt Cook National Park, which was awarded World Heritage status in recognition of its qualities and rare beauty. View Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain at 12,516 feet above sea level. You may wish to take an optional scenic flight over this awe inspiring alpine region (weather permitting, own expense). Stop at Oamaru, a historic town renowned for its distinctive cream limestone buildings then continue inland passing beautiful glacier fed lakes of incredible color. We journey south to Moeraki Beach with its unusual boulders onto Dunedin. Stay: Dunedin City Hotel. Bx1 Dx1

Day 3. Dunedin, Freedom of Choice Touring, Te Anau. Dunedin, founded in 1848 as a Free Church of Scotland settlement. This afternoon you can choose from a range of activities. Journey to the Otago Peninsula for a fascinating experience to either the Royal Albatross Colony or Penguin Place. Visit Speight's Brewery or wander through Olveston House. Travel across the South Island to the west coast region to the town of Te Anau. Stay: Te Anau, Village Inn. Bx1 Dx1

Day 4. Te Anau, Milford Sound. Today we follow the Remarkables Mountain Range to Fiordland National Park. Journey along the Milford Road, one of the world's finest alpine drives. We journey the full length of this fiord and this afternoon travel to Queenstown Two Night Stay: Queenstown, Novotel Gardens Hotel. Bx1

Day 5. Queenstown, Freedom of Choice Touring, Dine Around Dinner. Queenstown is a year round, alpine resort. Today we have a selection of activities for you to choose from. Take a guided tour of gardens or wineries, join an jetboat ride, take a Double Decker bus tour, enjoy a lakeshore and forest walk, experience a 4WD ‘Safari of the Scenes’ tour, explore Skippers Canyon or walk Mt Aspiring National Park. Day 6. Queenstown, Franz Josef. View magnificent scenery today as we travel along the rugged West Coast to Haast. Experience a unique river safari, capturing breathtaking views of the massive glacier formed Haast River Valley. Stay: Franz Josef Glacier Hotel. Bx1 Dx1

Day 7. TranzAlpine Train, Franz Josef. We travel to Hokitika by coach, and take the opportunity to see Pounamu (jade) being carved into beautiful jewellery. View the Franz Josef Glacier, a river of ice. At Arthurs Pass we board the award winning TranzAlpine Train. This journey has been voted one of the top train journeys in the world, and is renowned as New Zealand’s ‘Great Rail Adventure’. Cross the vast patchwork farmlands of the Canterbury Plains before desending into the Main Divide onto Christchurch. On arrival we enjoy a city sightseeing tour then it's your leisure to explore this pretty city. Perhaps take a leisurely punt along the Avon River or visit the Antarctic Centre (own expense). Day 8. Christchurch, Blenheim. Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island and renowned as the Garden City due to its profusion of elegant gardens and beautiful architecture. Christchurch was founded in 1850 as a model Church of England settlement and has retained a unique English flavor. Heading north witness the spectacular scenic journey through the Marlborough region, an area with a strong international reputation for white wines. Arrive in the thriving seaside settlement of Kaikoura, an area offering unique whale, seal and dolphin watching experiences. Journey between the rugged Kaikoura Ranges and Pacific Ocean, through North Canterbury to Blenheim. Stay: Blenheim Country Hotel. Bx1 Dx1

Day 9. Blenheim, Wellington This morning we join our cruise for the journey across Cook Strait to the North Island. Sail from Picton through the breathtaking natural beauty of Marlborough Sounds to the scenic Wellington Harbour. Rejoin our coach to enjoy a brief city sightseeing tour of Wellington, including Parliament Buildings, before we visit Te Papa the ‘National Museum of New Zealand’. Stay: Wellington, James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor. Bx1 Dx1

Day 10. Wellington, Rotorua. Leaving Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city and journey to the top of Mt Victoria for stunning panoramic views. We travel north and cross the vast volcanic plateau of World Heritage listed Tongariro National Park. See the spectacular Huka Falls, mouth of the mighty Waikato River, and tranquil Lake Taupo. Follow the Thermal Explorer Highway to the heart of the North Island traveling through green countryside, beautiful native bush and some of the largest alpine forests in the Southern Hemisphere. We view Wairakei Steam Valley, where thermal energy is harnessed in the world’s second largest geothermal power plant. We continue to Rotorua and tonight enjoy a Hangi (feast) and Maori cultural performance. Two Night Stay: Rotorua, Park Heritage Hotel. Bx1 Dx1

Day 11. Rotorua, Freedom of Choice Touring. Rotorua is New Zealand’s oldest and best known thermal resort, where generations of visitors have enjoyed its waters, marvelled at its fascinating geothermal activity and experienced the region's Maori culture. Rotorua was settled by the Te Arawa iwi people and the lakeshore was a prominent site of skirmishes during New Zealand's Maori wars of the 1860s. Today we give you the opportunity to choose the activity and we will include it. Country Homestay option available tonight. Bx1 Dx1

Day 12. Rotorua, Auckland. We travel north to Waitomo Caves to experience a guided tour of the underground limestone caverns, including the magnificent 'Cathedral' cave. Join a silent boat ride and glide through a mystical grotto, lit by millions of tiny glow worms. Emerge into daylight we continue onto the ‘City of Sails’, Auckland. Stay: Auckland, Skycity Hotel. Bx1

Day 13. Auckland, Bay of Islands Crossing Auckland’s busy Harbour Bridge we travel along the Hibiscus Coast to Matakohe, home to a boutique Museum with displays centred on early New Zealand pioneering history, the magnificent Kauri tree, it’s timber and gum. Travel through the Waipoua forest and continue north to the beautiful Bay of Islands, the cradle of European settlement in New Zealand. On arrival, we take a guided visit of the historic Waitangi Reserve where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. View the historic Waitangi Treaty House and it’s beautiful gardens, the Maori Meeting House and War Canoe. Two Night Stay: Paihia, Paihia Pacific Resort. Bx1 Dx1

Day 14. Bay of Islands, Freedom of Choice Sights Not only is the Bay of Islands the birthplace of the Nation and thus full of New Zealand history, it is also home to 144 islands and renowned as a favourite playground for lovers of anything aquatic; diving, sailing and big game fishing. Today you have the opportunity to choose the sightseeing activity that most interests you and we will include it. Whether it be a day trip to Cape Reinga at the very tip of New Zealand, a tour to Russell, the first capital of New Zealand, sailing on the “R Tucker Thompson” a unique tall ship, swimming with the dolphins, a round of golf at the scenic Waitangi Golf Course, a Bay of Islands fishing experience or simply relaxing on a beautiful golden sandy beach. Day 15. Bay of Islands, Auckland What better way to explore New Zealand’s finest National Maritime Park than on a catamaran cruise boat to Cape Brett and the famous ‘Hole in the Rock’. Sail through game fishing waters to view the Cape Brett lighthouse then make passage through the ‘Hole’ (sea conditions permitting). In these world-renowned deep sea-fishing grounds dolphins and schools of fish are frequently seen. Meander through the inner islands, viewing sandy beaches, rocky out crops and visit a secluded bay with time for relaxation. Return this afternoon to the diverse, cosmopolitan city of Auckland. Stay: Auckland, Sky City Hotel. Bx1 Dx1

Day 16. Auckland, Freedom of Choice Touring.Today you have the opportunity to choose an activity and we will include it! Journey to the top of the Sky Tower, cruise Waitemata Harbour, take a Waitakere Wilderness Experience, explore Auckland, visit Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World, indulge in a Bliss Royal Reflexology treatment at the Crowne Plaza or visit the Maritime or Auckland Museum. We then transferred to the airport for your flight home. Bx1
